How an outdoor socket is installed

An outdoor socket is fitted by taking a spur or new circuit from your fuse box, running cable to the wall position you want, and terminating it in an IP66 weatherproof enclosure protected by a 30mA RCD or RCBO. The circuit is then tested to BS 7671:2018 18th Edition and you receive certification.

Survey and quote first

I look at your existing fuse box, check whether there is spare capacity and whether RCD protection is already present, and agree exactly where you want the socket. Most people want it near the back door, the patio or halfway down the garden, and that choice changes the cable route and the price.

Protection at the fuse box

BS 7671 Regulation 411.3.3 requires 30mA RCD protection for socket-outlets, and outdoors that matters more than anywhere in the house. If your board is an older unit with no RCD, I will either fit an RCBO on the new circuit or quote separately for a board upgrade rather than bolting something unsafe onto old kit.

Cable, route and drilling

Short runs through a cavity wall are straightforward. Longer runs down the garden go in SWA armoured cable, correctly buried at depth and terminated with proper cable glands at both ends. Holes are drilled on a slight fall to the outside and sealed, so water tracks away from the wall rather than into it.

IP66 enclosure and glanding

The socket itself is a purpose-made external unit with a sprung lid, gasket and glanded entry — not an indoor socket in a plastic box. IP66 means it will cope with jet washing and Black Country weather in equal measure.

Testing and paperwork

Every job is tested for continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth loop impedance and RCD trip times. You get a Minor Works Certificate for a spur, or full certification for a new circuit, plus Part P notification where the work is notifiable.

What to think about on cost

A single socket on an existing outside wall, close to the board, sits at the low end. Costs climb with distance, with SWA and trenching, with awkward access, and with fuse box work if there is no usable RCD protection. How much does it cost to fit an outdoor socket?

A single weatherproof socket through an outside wall near your fuse box is the cheapest scenario; a socket at the bottom of a long garden with armoured cable and trenching costs considerably more. Fuse box work, if your board has no usable RCD, is quoted separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for. Every quote is free and no-obligation.

Can I just keep using an extension lead out of the window?

It is not something I would leave a customer doing. An indoor extension lead outdoors gets rained on, trapped in the window, dragged across paving and is often not on 30mA RCD protection, which is the safety device that saves you if the cable is damaged. A fitted IP66 socket costs once and removes the problem permanently.

Do I need a new fuse box to have an outdoor socket fitted?

Not always. If your existing board has working 30mA RCD protection and a spare way, I can add the circuit to it. If it is an older unit with rewireable fuses and no RCD, I will fit an RCBO where that is possible, or explain why a board replacement is the sensible route — and you are free to take that quote or leave it.

How long does the job take?

A single socket on an existing outside wall is usually a half-day, including testing and certification. Runs down the garden in SWA with trenching are typically a full day, sometimes two if the ground is heavy or the route has to go around a protected tree.

Does the work need to be notified to Dudley Council?

A new outdoor circuit is notifiable under Part P Building Regulations; a spur off an existing indoor circuit generally is not. I confirm which applies to your job at the quote stage and handle the notification where it is needed, so you are not left chasing paperwork.

What paperwork will I get when you finish?

Can you fit the socket where I want it, or does it have to go by the back door?
